As PRISM Renderings approaches its 20th anniversary, I’ve been reflecting on the road that brought us here—the wins, the challenges, and the lessons learned along the way.
One of the most powerful lessons came from an unexpected source: my son, when he performed as first chair viola in the Texas All-State Symphony. The concert was at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio, filled with teachers, music directors, and proud parents. The energy in the hall was electric.
The most talented young musicians from across the state had just four days to prepare, yet when they began to play…
The harmonies.
The precision.
The emotion.
It sounded like a professional orchestra. To my ears, it was flawless.
Afterward, we congratulated my son on such a perfect performance. That’s when he surprised me:
“Actually, we made a lot of little mistakes—missed notes, timing slightly off—but we kept going, adjusted, and stayed together. Most people wouldn’t even notice.”
That moment has stayed with me.
It reminded me that high-performing teams, respected companies, and admired organizations may look fantastic from the outside. But behind the scenes, there are always challenges, misalignments, and imperfections. The magic isn’t in being flawless, it’s in working together, adapting, and creating something beautiful despite the mistakes.
Over the past two decades, PRISM has had its share of “missed notes” with projects requiring last-minute adjustments, unexpected challenges, and moments when the next step wasn’t perfectly clear. But by listening to one another, adjusting as needed, and staying focused on the bigger picture, we’ve built something lasting and meaningful.
Perfection is not required for excellence. If we wait to be perfect, we may never start.
Whether in music, entrepreneurship, or life, success comes from showing up, listening, adjusting, and moving forward together. Because sometimes, the true beauty isn’t in the perfection, it’s in the harmony we create despite the imperfections.
